Sidney Barthell, LMP NCTMB
Sidney Barthell got her degree in massage from Port Townsend School of Massage in 2006. Swedish Massage is her specialty. “Swedish Massage is very versatile; it can be used for relaxation, for sports, for treatment; it really encompasses many disciplines. In addition, it shares many techniques with Tui Na, the Chinese system of massage.”
In her treatments, Sidney gives special attention to feedback from her client, asking for responses to depth of pressure, and working with the client to identify problem areas and in order to work at a comfortable level to address each specific area of concern. Every massage is tailored to the needs of the client. If the client wants foot work for an hour, that’s what they will get. If they need back, shoulder and neck work, that’s what they will get. If they want a “relax me, settle me” massage, then that’s what they get.
Her continuing education focus is on Home and Community Herbalism, and Oriental Diagnostics, as it applies to the general health of the individual, and study of the meridian systems for use in massage and herbal application. “I am interested in helping people to access the simple treatments which can be done in the home to bring comfort and resolution to the many minor and chronic complaints we all have, without resorting to OTC drugs or prescriptions for conditions that really do not warrant these catagories of medication. I want to enable people to use their own resources first, and qualify their health problems, so they can use the simpler home remedies with confidence, and access the pharmaceuticals and the medical system appropriately when the situation warrants it.”

She infuses her massage oils with herbs and flowers, many grown in her own gardens, emphasising those oils which are food grade, and cold pressed, rather than solvent extracted or manufactured. “The skin is the largest absorptive organ we have; I was uncomfortable using manufactured lotions and oils because of the many preservatives and other ingredients I couldn’t pronounce,” she laughs, “So I began making my own with ingredients I knew the body would recognize as historically sound nutritive substances.”
